Despite patent filings, market dominance, and financial resources, copycat competition continues to pose an existential threat to all businesses. How can a business shield itself from copycats?

In this session, LEGO professor of management and innovation Howard Yu shows that succeeding in today’s marketplace is no longer just a matter of mastering the old (copycat tactics); companies also need to continue the discovery process, harnessing new strategies and advancements in technology while leveraging shifts in the marketplace (leap strategy). Yu identifies five fundamental principles that allow companies to make a leap and stay successful in the face of such competition.

LEAPING FORWARD REINVENTING THE GAME TO THRIVE FOR HYPERGROWTH

Outlasting competition is difficult. Doing so for decades is near impossible. Yet some pioneering companies have prevailed and even prospered for centuries. How did they do it? And what can we learn from them as we compete in an arena where everything can be copied? All the competitive advantages we have today mean nothing, when latecomers can copy any product or service and produce it cheaper. Even expert intuition and market intelligence have been overtaken by machine algorithms.

Prof. Howard Yu is the LEGO Professor of Management and Innovation in the prestigious IMD Business School in Switzerland, as well as the director of its signature Advanced Management Programme (AMP), an executive education course. In 2015, Prof. Yu was selected by Poets&Quants as one of ‘The World’s Top 40 Business Professors Under 40’. He was shortlisted for the 2017 Thinkers50 Innovation Award, and then in 2018, appeared on the Thinkers50 radar list of 30 management thinkers ‘most likely to shape the future of how organisations are managed and led’.

He is the author of the bestseller Leap: How to Thrive in a World Where Everything Can Be Copied. In his book, Prof. Yu shows that succeeding in today’s marketplace is no longer about mastering copycat tactics. Companies also need to leap across knowledge disciplines, and rethink how a product is made or a service is delivered. This proven tactic can protect a company from being overtaken by new (and often foreign) copycat competitors. The book was named among the ‘Top 3 Business Books on Strategy of 2018’ by Strategy+Business and was among the ‘Top 10 Business Strategy Books of 2018’ by Inc. Magazine.

Prof. Yu has delivered customised training programmes for leading organisations including Maersk, Daimler, and Electrolux. His articles have appeared in Forbes, Fortune, Harvard Business Review, Financial Times, and The New York Times. Prof Yu received his doctoral degree in Management from Harvard Business School.
